Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

History of Chocolate Wafer Day

Probably the most prominent example of chocolate wafers is the now famous Kit Kat bar, a delicious combination of chocolate and wafers that are popular in America. But those are just the wafers that are covered in chocolate, Nabisco makes a style of wafers that are actually completely chocolate and utterly delicious all on their own. But that’s not how we suggest you actually consume them, instead follow their recipe for an incredible chocolate wafer cake and you’ll know what true bliss is.

Another version of the chocolate wafer can be found in the chocolate waffle cones that are used to serve ice-cream. While shaped into a cone and called waffle cones, that just refers to the patterns that come from their preparation. At the end of the day they’re still wafers, and we look forward to enjoying them in the summer heat each year, and in the dead of winter. Spring is nice… Ok, just every season, chocolate wafer are that delicious!

How to Celebrate Chocolate Wafer Day

Celebrating Chocolate Wafer Day is easy and delicious, you just have to consume your favorite treat that has chocolate wafers in it! Never had chocolate wafers before? Well, that’s not ok! We’ll set you up a recipe for your own chocolate wafers, and you can try it and introduce yourself and your friends to it this year!

Chocolate Wafers From Scratch!

• 1 1/2c flour
• 3/4c cocoa unsweetened
• 1c + 2T sugar
• 1/4t salt
• 1/4t baking soda
• 14t butter softened
• 3T milk
• 1t Vanilla Extract

Mix together the dry ingredients and mix in a food processor until thoroughly blended, and proceed to cut up the butter and add them to the bowl. Pulse the mix a few times and then mix in the milk and vanilla while the blender is running. Continue to run until the mixture begins to stick to the blade or the bowl, then transfer the dough onto a cutting board and knead.

Take the mixture and form into a 14 in log approximately 2in in diameter and wrap in wax paper to chill in the fridge for an hour. Preheat oven to 350, and then slice the log into 1/4in or less thick slices, and place them an inch apart on cookie sheets lined with wax paper. 12-15 minutes and they’re done! Let them cool and enjoy!

Ice Cream was first said to be created in Ancient Greece, before the idea of a refrigerator ever came to pass. The so-called “Ice Cream” was incredibly rudimentary, being a mixture of snow honey and fruit, but it was still the beginnings of a great tradition.

The first true Ice Cream was said to be introduced by Catherine de’ Medici in the 16th century. So impressed was Charles I of England (one hundred years after this introduction) that he paid to keep the formula secret, making ice cream a royal prerogative, utterly unobtainable by the common man. The first recorded recipes didn’t exist until the 18th century.

Truly Ice Cream was a treat meant for the most notable of humans, and now we can all enjoy it any day of the year! Ice Cream Month encourages us to be particularly indulgent during the month of July!

Ice Cream Month has only one appropriate celebration, gorge yourself on Ice Cream at every opportunity!
