We sit each day in cubicles and under flickering lights, staring at screens that shimmer with a digital world, and every day we lose ourselves a little bit to the cold light of electron pathways.

Children dive into games, experiencing narratives created by dreamers of other worlds, without ever learning to open their minds and find the narrative within themselves.

International Mud Month was created to remind us that outside, away from the geometrical perfection of man’s world, lay the organized chaos of mother nature’s realm, and the importance of maintaining our connection to it.

History of International Mud Month

In 2009 the children of Bold Park Community School joined forces with the boys of the Nepalese Panchkhal orphanage to celebrate the visceral and primal connection we all share with Earth and the outdoors.

Bold Park used this opportunity to raise funds to help support the less fortunate children of Nepal. Since that fateful beginning, schools, families, and ECE centers from all over the world have worked together to promote the idea that we all need to play in the mud sometimes, just to remember what it means to be human.

In 2015 it was decided that one day of playing in the mud simply wasn’t sufficient to ground us after a year of being lost in the technological glitz and digital glamour of our modern world, and so it was changed from “International Mud Day” to “International Mud Month”, and thus the celebration continued!

It’s not all about our personal connection with the Earth, but also about how we as humans connect to one another, and the relationships we form throughout our lives. Like any two ponds of mud, no two humans are exactly alike, and so International Mud Month encourages us to share that diversity and celebrate it!

How to Celebrate International Mud Month

First off, get ye to the mountains and fields! Out among the blooming flowers and down into the flowing creeks. Head out over the airy mountain, and through the wooded glen, and get muddy up to your neck in search of fairy dens!

Then start organizing with others to create fund-raisers centered on remembering that we were all wild once, and we should not let the digital world tame us! Get out there and play in the mud!

The suns up, the birds are singing, and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish, but June is Camping Month, and it’s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors.

Research shows that people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed, and tend to buy more bug repellant. What? We don’t like mosquitoes anymore than you do, but we do love camping! Who doesn’t love sitting under the stars roasting marshmallows and making S’mores, or waking up to the smell of wood smoke and bacon?

History of Camping Month

While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive’, that all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail, and once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world.

This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a spot to camp, get up the next day, and do it all over again.

What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping, and everything in between.

Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening, or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.

How to celebrate Camping Month

Well this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it’s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There’s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant woods, and they’re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves.

So pile into your car, find yourself some secluded spot to set up a tent, and celebrating Camping Month by going camping!

Bingo goes mobile

Like thousands of other games, Bingo has found a home on mobile devices — allowing players to enjoy Bingo around the clock from the palm of their hand.

1990s

"Drag Bingo"

A Seattle nonprofit supporting people with AIDS began staging Bingo games to raise funds. Drag queens dressed as nuns hosted the event — which proved enormously successful.

1929

"Beano"

Toymaker Edwin Lowe discovered people playing a game called Beano at a carnival outside Atlanta. Competitors used dried beans, a rubber stamp, and cardboard sheets. Lowe, whose company went on to produce the dice game, Yahtzee, helped Bingo gain nationwide attention. Lowe apparently renamed it after overhearing someone accidentally yell "Bingo" instead of "Beano."

1778

"Le Lotto"

This French game gently pushed Bingo into the modern era by featuring a card with 27 numbers (nine columns and three rows). The numbers, at the time, ranged from one to 90. Only wealthy people played at first, but the game soon spread across the country.

"Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia"

Although this sounds like an amazing dessert, it's actually an Italian lottery game. Italy's government still sponsors weekly games and uses the proceeds to fund public projects.
