History of National HVAC Tech Day

Founded in 2016, by ARS/Rescue Rooter, a national provider of home services, National HVAC Tech Day is to show appreciation for all HVAC technicians in the industry. In honoring them we choose to explore the history behind the development of the air conditioning.

Romans are largely credited with having the first central heating system that channeled hot air from a furnace through pipes inside walls and beneath floors. Early Korea also had a similar system, using excess heat from cooking stoves to heat the air. Additionally, early Muslim architects are known to have constructed pipes under floors to keep the entire building warm.

When it comes to cooling, Ancient Egyptians hung cold towels in the windows so that the air would come in contact with the towels and cool off inside residents. In 200 CE, China invented fans near water fountains that blew cold air through the room. And during the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin brought advancements when experimenting with chemical evaporation by discovering how to freeze surfaces.

Just after the turn of the century, Albert Marsh discovered Chromel; an alloy made of Chromium and Nickel. This new alloy heralded the coming of electrical heating elements in the market and was also 300 times stronger than other similar materials at the time. For his contributions, Albert Marsh is widely regarded as “the father of the electrical heating industry.” Finally, in 1902 Willis Carrier invented the first modern air conditioning unit by reversing the process a heater uses.

The suns up, the birds are singing, and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn’t all rainbows and fresh fish, but June is Camping Month, and it’s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors.

History of Camping Month

While there was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive’, that all changed in the 1800’s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail, and once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world.

This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a spot to camp, get up the next day, and do it all over again.

What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping, and everything in between.

Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening, or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.

How to celebrate Camping Month

Well this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it’s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There’s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant woods, and they’re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves.

These delicious treats were said to have first been invented by the French Chef Antonin Carême, a man with a tragic history that led to a grand creation in the early 19th century.

He was abandoned by his parents in the tumultuous days of the French Revolution and found work as a kitchen boy to keep himself housed and fed. Some time later he found himself working as an apprentice to a famous pâtissier named Sylvain Bailly.

The young boy blossomed into an amazingly talented chef, so talented in fact that when he left Bailly’s training he was able to move from employer to employer with impunity. This was rare in a time when one’s employer practically owned them, in this case, he could move freely, such was his talent.

Out of that talent came a long-standing love for the delicacy that would disappear so fast it was named for this tendency. Some time later the Chocolate Éclair was invented and took its well-deserved position as the King of the Éclair.
