If you have ever purchased something and needed to return it, you have exercised your consumer’s rights. These rights have not always been something that was easily defined or enforced. The organization Consumers International has been bringing awareness to these rights with World Consumer Rights Day.

History of World Consumer Rights Day

Consumers International was founded in 1960 with the goal to fight for a fair, safe and sustainable future for consumers in a global market dominated by international corporations. Citing President John F. Kennedy’s groundbreaking address to Congress, they take his definition of consumer rights as their definition. It is also agreed that the President’s remarks set the ball in motion to make these rights something more than just words on paper, but rights that would come to be something enforceable.

World Consumer Rights Day originated in 1983 to mobilize citizen action. Citizen action groups have been a large part of bringing change into the marketplace. They have lobbied for safer products and protections from harmful practices and products. Over time, the consumer movement has worked to write what is now regarded as the 8 basic consumer rights. These rights include ideas such as the right to safety, the right to satisfaction of basic needs, the right to redress and the right to be informed.

Consumers International has over 200 members and spans 100 countries. They take their mission of being a voice and champion for consumers in policy-making forums and in the global marketplace. They work outside of any political parties and maintains their independence so that they can make sure that consumers are treated properly.

How to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day

Each year, World Consumer Rights Day adopts a theme to highlight. Some themes from the past have included antibiotic resistance and healthier diets. To celebrate in your community, look for events that are trying to bring awareness to consumer rights, or areas of public policy that need to be changed. The day is about mobilizing citizen action groups across the world and if everyone joined in to help in their own communities, it would come closer to meeting their goals.

Another way to spend the day is to find out what the goals are that being addressed and see if there are ways that you can help. It may take the form of emailing, writing or calling your local elected officials. Perhaps the need to look to Washington or other capitals that are making policy will need to be addressed. Consumers International is all about making sure that the voice of the consumer is never silenced. So, raise your voice and let it be heard!

President John F. Kennedy was a pioneer in many ways. Nutrition Month is celebrated every March, and is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Nutrition Month focuses on helping people to make correct food choices as well as developing good eating and exercising habits.

1973 saw the launch of Nutrition Week by presidential proclamation, and by 1980 it had been transformed to cover the entire month of March. Federal and state governments as well as the American Dietetic Association (as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics was then known) enthusiastically embraced Nutrition Month as an excellent vehicle to promote healthy eating and as a way to educate the public.

Nutrition Month is centered around a different theme each year, and during the years 1977 to 1980, Nutribird, who had a bright green cabbage for his head and a bold orange carrot beak, was the logo for the month.

To make eating healthily more interesting, some fun food facts:

• Banana plants are members of the herb family.

• One can of soda contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar.
• A hardboiled egg will spin but a soft-boiled one won’t.
• A medium-sized potato is a similar size to a computer mouse.
• Only wash grapes just before you eat them as they keep better unwashed.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics makes it easy to celebrate Nutrition Month as they have a bundle of activity hand-outs and nutrition tip sheets available for children and adults. They suggest trying out a new healthy food each week to give variety, eating at some of the many ethnic restaurants as they often offer lots of healthy options, and varying cooking methods as this gives foods a different taste.

With the coming of spring, many people celebrate this season in many different ways. For the people f Ohio, they celebrate it in an unusual but fun way; bird watching.

Not just by any birds, however, but by watching the buzzards come back from their long trip back from migration. This day is Buzzards Day, a day that celebrates the long return of these birds to their nesting grounds during the beginning of spring.

History of Buzzards Day

Buzzards are another word for turkey vultures, a species of vulture protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Vultures such as buzzards are protected because removing birds such as scavengers can have cascading impacts within an ecosystem and human health.

Buzzards migrate from the border areas of Canada and the northern United States to South America and the Caribbean. Because turkey vultures are also migratory birds, Buzzards Day is specifically celebrated for their return before the beginning of spring.

The holiday is specifically celebrated in the state of Ohio. Hinckley, Ohio, of all places, has a local history connected to these scavengers.

In 1957, Walter Nawalaniec, a patrolman for Cleveland Metroparks, told reporter Robert Bordner of the Cleveland Press and local historian, Miss Eunice Morton of Richfield, that he tracked the bird’s appearance on this date for the past six years.

As the news spread that year, over 9,000 visitors came to see the buzzards fly into the area. It is now believed that these birds have been coming to the state of Ohio over the past 150 years due to its rocky ridges, open fields, and forests, which is an ideal place for breeding for these birds.

Buzzards Day celebrates the day by having hot pancakes and sausages, a tradition set forth by the Chamber of Commerce as a way to greet these birds and celebrate the first coming of spring.

How to Celebrate Buzzards Day

Celebrate Buzzard’s Day by eating some pancakes and sausage for breakfast or brunch. You can also participate by traveling to the Hinckley festival to see the buzzards migrate back up north from their long trip.
