During National Embroidery Month, this and every February, we’re taking a moment to appreciate an art that’s perhaps been underestimated, or at least underpublicized. Embroidery, the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread, has a vast and varied history, and still maintains a strong following of crafters today. Everyone has seen examples. From name labels on the breasts of work polos, to military insignia on veterans’ hats, to the old jean jacket your favorite aunt put the design on by hand, it seems as though almost everything in the world of fashion is embroidered, or well could be – and embroiderers today are able to create just about any design.

Though most commercial embroidery is now done by computerized machine, the craft itself is believed to date back to 30,000 B.C. Cro-Magnon men and women, according to reports of an archaeological discovery, used fibrous plant threads and the sinews of animals to sew intricate rows of ivory, shells, and other materials to their various coverings and clothing. Other discoveries reported from Siberia and locations near there, as well as from Egypt, show embroidery used not only as decoration, but as a historical record and as a sign of social status.

History of Vegan Cuisine Month

Vegan Cuisine Month was started by the American Vegan Society to help bring awareness to how easy it can be to switch from meat eating to plant eating. The American Vegan Society was started by President Freya Dinshah, who wrote The Vegan Kitchen (1965), the first cookbook in the U.S. to explain veganism and give vegan recipes to the United States. She and her husband have since been considered to be the founders of the vegan and vegetarian movements throughout the United States as well as the rest of the world.

Some of the things that Freya did for the vegan cause is negotiated with food service personnel for conference catering (1974-1999) and created the first vegan volume recipes for use in colleges, restaurants, hospitals, and other institutions. Freya and her husband through the organization host magazines for their members to read, cooking classes for vegans to take, and other various programs that keep their members up to date about veganism in today’s age.

VS celebrates Vegan Cuisine Month by inviting people to try vegan food, ultimately attempting to create awareness of the variety of options that you have with vegan recipes.

How to Celebrate Vegan Cuisine Month

If you want to be accommodating and start trying out vegan cuisine, then look up vegan recipes online to try out and host a party at your place. If you’re going out for the night, then ask for a vegan option at your favorite restaurant and see what they have to offer. If you’re proud to be a vegan, then take pictures of your food and use the hashtag #VeganCuisineMonth and #AVS in your social media posts. You can also join a local organization and find friends in a vegan community who love being vegans.

One of the things that people often forget is that being a librarian isn’t like getting a job at the local supermarket. You want to be a Librarian? Be prepared to get a degree in Library Science. Yes, this is a thing that exists, and it’s necessary to become a librarian.

There’s more to a Library than just the books too! There are meetings that gather there that include everything from people from the Society for Creative Anachronism and other local organizations. There’s also magazines and periodicals, microfiche of local newspapers reaching far back into antiquity, and that’s just a start!

How to celebrate Library Lovers’ Month

Love your library for what it is, a community meeting place or treasure trove of ideas. There is so much to be found there, including new books to read and guidance on research with papers you may have due. The people who frequent the library tend to be intellectuals, so who knows what kind of interesting conversations you could get into?

Why not push against the declining attendance of libraries and go and learn something new that will expand your knowledge of who you are, of where you live or what you do?
