History of Cherry Month

Cherry month was established to help bring awareness to the availability of the fruit throughout the year. Leelanau Fruit Co. celebrates it in some of the most outrageous ways possible, including such competitions as pie eating competitions, where cherry pies are consumed en masse as tribute to their crimson deliciousness.

There’s also the Cherry juice flip cup, and the decidedly less tasty and perhaps somewhat disconcerting pit spitting competitions. Thankfully cherries aren’t about showing decorum, but lavishly enjoying this most delicious fruit and relishing in all of its glory, right down to the pit!

Cherries as we know them originated with the sweet cherry, a tree that ranges all throughout Europe and into some of Northern Africa. It’s been eaten since times prehistoric, and was ultimately introduced to England in Teynham by order of the King, Henry VIII. Since then they spread throughout the world and are now enjoyed everywhere in all their variations.

This is particularly surprising given that cherry trees are somewhat finicky and difficult to keep alive, especially in wet climates. Here’s looking at you England, how you managed to keep them alive on that great foggy island North North-East of Spain is nothing shy of amazing. But that’s the power of people’s love of cherries. They’ll do anything to get their fix.

How to celebrate Cherry Month

Cherry Month is best celebrated by indulging in massive consumption of cherries. Start your day with a fresh bowl of cherries chilled from the fridge, and pack a few for lunch. Share them with your friends at work, and bring a few varieties you hadn’t tried up till now! Throughout the month you can add a glass of tart cherry juice, well known for its ability to help ease sore muscles, and on at least one night indulge in a piping hot slice of cherry pie. North American Inclusion Month (NAIM) was created by the Yachad/National Jewish Council for Disabilities. Now some five years old, the North American Inclusion Month was established as a way of recognising the need for more opportunities for people with disabilities, including in both employment and education. February 2nd, 2010 saw a U.S. House of Representatives resolution, which acknowledged the goals of NAIM.

NAIM is an opportunity for society to be more inclusive regarding people with disabilities. Regardless of an individual’s disabilities the North American Inclusion Month aims to make them feel every bit a part of society as an able-bodied person. The month is not in place to create a better understanding of a disabled person’s needs and aspirations for just four weeks. The North American Inclusion Month is used as a way of galvanising a more positive approach, concerning people with disabilities, for the whole year.

Making society more inclusive for people with disabilities can begin with simple individual actions during NAIM. Going out of one’s way to interact more with people with disabilities is one example. Often people will not interact with people with disabilities because they are nervous about saying or doing the right thing. However, not feeling part of society is what will often hurt a disabled person most of all.

From children to adults, people with disabilities can feel part of things throughout North American Inclusion Month. Sport should also be inclusive, and this can be achieved by adapting aspects of that sport where necessary. Children at school, who are affected by hearing or sight problems, can be helped by aids, which will make them able to enjoy a lesson just as much as their classmates. For elderly people with disabilities a nostalgia night, which includes a sing-along, can help bring back happy memories.

The York Peppermint Pattie was created in York, South Carolina by Thomas Ravenel in 1920, and marketed by his York Cone Company throughout the Northeast United States. So successful was the York Peppermint Patty that the York Cone company stopped producing the cones for which it was named, and focused its entire effort on making the new candy sensation its creators had unveiled. In 1972 the York Cone Company was sold to Peter Paul, who made sure that the rest of the nation was able to enjoy its dark chocolatey, pepperminty deliciousness.

The best thing about the York Peppermint Patty is that you just can’t eat too many, who could get tired of that special blend of flavors? You don’t even need to worry about getting a tummy ache, after all the best thing to eat when you’ve got an upset stomach is peppermint, everyone knows that!

How to celebrate Peppermint Patty Day

The best way to celebrate Peppermint Patty Day is by eating this delicious candy! But we can do ever so much better than that, as one of the less well known uses for Peppermint Patties is their inclusion in other culinary treats! Our personal favorite? Peppermint Patty Brownies, and because we love you so much, we’re going to share the recipe for it with you.

Peppermint Patty Brownies recipe

• 1 ½c butter (never use margarine)
• 3 c sugar (we prefer Damari!)
• 1 t vanilla extract (not imitation!)
• 5 eggs (free range!)
• 2 c all-purpose flour
• 1 c unsweetened cocoa powder (free trade!)
• 1 t baking powder
• 1 t salt
• 24 York Peppermint Patties (Small)

Brownies are a delightfully simple thing to make, you just start by blending together the butter, sugar, and vanilla, and then adding the eggs until it’s well mixed. Next you add flour, cocoa powder, and salt, and blend it up again. Next take and set aside 2 cups of the batter, grease a 13x9x2 pan and pour the rest of the batter into it and lay out the peppermint patties in a single layer. Pour the rest of the batter over the patties, and then back for 55 minutes at 350F!
