A pie as an entity has been around for thousands of years. In Ancient Egypt bakers used to fill bread dough with honey, fruit, and nuts and serve it to the Pharaoh. There are drawings depicting this on the tomb walls of Ramses II.

The first pie to be eaten in the United States was in 1620, when the pilgrims brought their

favorite family pie recipes with them to America. These were English-style, meat-based recipes.

The first pumpkin pie was recorded in a cookbook in 1675 and became popular in the 1800s. It’s our love for a sweet-tasting pie that makes an American pie distinctive, and over the years it has become woven into our culture as a symbol of tradition and the home. This is backed up by the fact that July 4, our nation’s birthday, is one of the most popular days to bake and eat pie.

By 1990 our love for pied had blossomed so much that the Great American Pie Month was declared to be February.

BTO focuses their efforts on asking what’s causing the changes in bird activity, such as their migration methods, locations, and how the weather will impact the food supply for birds that season.

According to BTO, the increase in landscaping and property restoration has cause many birds to speed up their breeding season, laying up to 30 days earlier than usual since the 1960s. Because of Nest Box Week, over 6 million boxes have been placed in gardens in the United Kingdom alone.

Nest Box Week gives people a first look into the world of birds by helping them pay attention to the world around them and giving people a chance to give back to the natural environment.

How to Celebrate Nest Box Week

Nest Box Week is all about the birds, and the best way that the British Trust for Ornithology has helped make the celebration of this holiday easier is by creating a nest box guide so people can easily install the right kind of bird box for their local birds.

Building and installing nest boxes is the first step towards observing birds for science. To celebrate this holiday, start by watching the birds around you and seeing how they inhabit the world around them. Look at the variety of plants and see what factors the birds are considering when making their nests.

History of National Cherry Month

Cherries have been a staple for centuries. From the Roman Empire to the Chinese Dynasties, the little red fruits have been on the plate of millions and came to America by ship with early settlers in the 1600s.

Modern-day cherry production in the United States began in 1852 when Peter Dougherty started to plant cherry trees on Old Mission Peninsula in the state of Michigan. The Midwest area proved to have an ideal climate for growing cherries and mass harvesting soon took place, with the first commercial tart cherry orchards in Michigan being planted in 1893. Soon production surpassed other major crops and the first cherry processing facility, Traverse City Canning Company, was built with the ruby-red fruit soon being shipped to neighboring cities in the Midwest. Outreach to the entire country was created shortly after.

February was chosen as National Cherry Month for numerous reasons, one of which dates back to 1912 when Japan gifted 3000 cherry trees to the United States, a symbol of friendship between the two nations. The park where the trees were planted still stands in Washington DC. 

February is also the month where both President’s Day and George Washington’s Birthday occur, with Washington ingrained in American culture as the “alleged chopper of the cherry tree”. The tale goes that George Washington’s father had asked who chopped down a cherry tree on the family’s farm. The young Washington answered, “I cannot tell a lie, I chopped down the cherry tree.” This event helped shape the first president’s honest and trustworthy persona.
