Elf is the fifth highest grossing Christmas movie of all time. The 2003 film’s opening weekend earned over $31 million, and was only beat out to be number one that weekend by The Matrix Revolutions. The film did so well that it remains Will Ferrell’s second highest grossing movie. Considering that the film had the potential to end Ferrell’s barely starting film career, it’s pretty crazy that it ended up being one of his most influential projects to date! 

 

$33 million budget

Which it almost paid off entirely in its opening weekend. Considering the average budget for a film ranges anywhere from $70 to $90 million, Elf did very well with its lower budget consisting of $33 million. Every single penny was obviously well spent as you can bet the movie is in most people’s lexicon of favorite Christmas films. 

 

$1 million in the first week on Broadway

People just can’t get enough of Buddy the Elf! It’s first week performed on Broadway, Elf: The Musical grossed over $1 million! Though the overall story remains pretty much the same, there are a few differences from the film to keep the audience on their toes. First of all, the story is narrated by Santa instead of Papa Elf. Also, Santa uses an iPhone to keep his list of names instead of a giant book. Instead of finding Miles Finch’s notes, Walter’s staff comes across a copy of an unpublished manuscript for a Christmas story, wiping out the character of Miles Finch all together.

There have been dozens of excellent Christmas movies released through the years, but perhaps none as lovable as Will Ferrell’s Elf. We’re not exaggerating when we say that Elf is the best Christmas movie of the 21st century. In fact, it was recognized as such by Fandango users in 2017. But did you know that Elf as we know it could have been a completely different movie? Will Ferrell wasn’t even the original choice to play Buddy! Gasp! 

 

Screenwriter David Berenbaum had initially wrote the script for Elf in 1993 with Jim Carrey in mind to star as Buddy. The screenplay went through years of rewrites and edits with his later writing team consisting of Adam McKay and (second gasp) Will Ferrell. The script at this stage was very dark, and Jon Favreau initially didn’t have much interest in it, despite wanting to be apart of Ferrell’s first post Saturday Night Live film project. So instead of declining the opportunity, Favreau rewrote the script and turned Buddy’s world into an homage to the Rankin Bass Christmas specials.

 

Changing the movie from a raunchy dark comedy to a genuine Christmas movie allowed them to rate it as PG instead of the PG-13 rating the original script would have had. Will Ferrell took a huge risk and played Buddy in what he described as a role that could either make or break his future career. Terry Zwigoff was approached to direct the film, but declined due to a prior commitment to another Christmas comedy, Bad Santa. After searching for multiple directors, Jon Favreau eventually decided to direct it himself. With Favreau’s willingness to give Ferrell the flexibility to make Buddy his own (many of our favorite classic lines were improvised by Ferrell, including “You sit on a throne of lies”) Buddy was allowed to become the funny, charming, and charismatic character we all fell in love with in 2003!

For those of us who do not know what a suckling pig is, here is the basic definition for it; A suckling pig is a piglet fed on its mother’s milk. In culinary contexts, a suckling pig is slaughtered between the ages of two and six weeks. It is traditionally cooked whole, often roasted, in various cuisines.

It is usually prepared for special occasions and gatherings. The meat from suckling pig is pale and tender and the cooked skin is crisp and can be used for pork rinds The texture of the meat can be somewhat gelatinous due to the amount of collagen in a young pig. How to celebrate Roast Suckling Pig Day

To celebrate this day, all we really have to do is follow the recipe above, make the pig for the whole family and invite a few friends over as well, serve it up as soon as it is done and eat as a group. There isn’t a better way to celebrate this day than to have the meal it was named after, and since it is close to that time of year, why not have a bit of eggnog with the meal?

Here’s what Roast Suckling Pig consists of, along with a recipe.

• One (Twelve to Eighteen Pound) whole suckling pig
• Fifteen quarts of water
• Six and a half cups of kosher salt
• Four and a half cups of granulated sugar
• A half cup of vegetable oil, for basting

Here are the instructions on how to cook the Suckling Pig

• Rinse pig in cold water and set aside. Line a 32-gallon garbage bag with 2 more 32-gallon garbage bags. Place water, salt, and sugar in the tripled-up garbage bags and stir to dissolve, taking care not to puncture the bags. Place pig in the bags, remove excess air, and tie tightly. Place in a 15-quart container in the refrigerator and brine 12 to 24 hours, turning once.
• Heat the oven to 250°F and arrange a rack on the lowest level. Remove the pig from the brine and pat dry with paper towels; discard brine. Lay the pig on its side and stuff the interior with 15 to 20 large (20-inch-long) pieces of lightly crumpled aluminum foil until it’s filled out. (This will prevent caving during roasting.)
• Transfer the pig to a baking sheet fitted with a roasting rack. Arrange it stomach down with the back legs tucked underneath and pointing forward, and the front legs tucked underneath and toward its sides. (You may need to add more foil if it is not sitting properly.) Prop up the head with foil or a large ramekin to keep the back aligned. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and place in the oven.
• Roast the pig, rotating once, until it reaches 130°F, about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Remove the foil, baste with oil, and increase the oven temp to 400°F.
• Roast, basting every 15 minutes with oil and rotating once more, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F, about 45 minutes to 1 hour more. (If the ears or snout become too brown, cover with foil.) Remove from the oven and let rest 20 minutes before carving.
