History of Suspender’s Day

The year is 1820, and an old idea is being cultivated into a new rendition. Albert Thurston was the man who brought this fashion sensation into the modern age. Pants were high in the 1920’s, so high that a belt was simply impractical, and so it was that a new solution was needed.

50 years later, the notable and notorious Samuel Clemens, known almost universally as ‘Mark Twain’ to us modern folks, finally got a patent for these universally worn garments. At the time, these suspenders were worn almost universally under a waistcoat, which prompted a shift to belts in the 1930’s as the waistcoat went out of fashion. After all, the male suspender was seen to be as much underwear as the ladies suspenders that held up their stockings.

For modern wear, Suspenders are used primarily with formal suits and tuxedos, and are otherwise not common in today’s fashion industry. Unless you’re a hipster.

Such an observation is desperately needed, as superstitions surrounding black cats had gotten so out of control that shelters won’t even adopt them out during October any longer. Too often the cats were being adopted as part of the Halloween holiday mystique, and would be abandoned or worse after the holiday passed.

Throughout the rest of the year, it’s typically more difficult to get them adopted, how much more difficult? Black cats are adopted at a rate 50% lower than any other color of cat, which we can’t understand at all. A sable furred cat is perhaps one of the most beautiful animals to walk the earth.

The first and best way is to do your part in dispelling the myths surrounding black cats and their supposed luck-altering abilities. If you’re going to a shelter to adopt a kitten, consider adopting a black kitten to ensure they find their way into a good home, and if it’s a black kitten with special needs so much the better!
